This summer I had the privilege of photographing an extended family gathering at the breathtaking Milan Manor House on Smith Mountain Lake, VA. Nestled on 30 acres of rolling Virginia country/lake side, this historic manor home is the perfect backdrop for family reunions, intimate weddings, and special getaways. Every corner of the property carries a sense of charm and timeless beauty, making it a dream location for both celebrations and photography.
This family had come together for a vacation, and it was clear from the very beginning that their time here was all about connection, laughter, and simply enjoying one another. They were so easygoing and fun to be around, which made capturing their personalities an absolute joy. We were blessed with a cool, comfortable morning, it was so refreshing!
As we explored the grounds around the house, there were countless opportunities to highlight the family’s warmth against the manor’s gorgeous setting. From wide group shots with the historic home as a stately backdrop to candid moments of cousins giggling together on the lawn.
One of the things I love most about photographing extended families is seeing the different dynamics come alive…grandparents beaming with pride, siblings teasing each other, and little ones running free in the open spaces. This family embodied all of that and more. Their joy was contagious, and it truly reminded me why I love capturing these moments: because family time is fleeting, but photographs preserve the love and connection for years to come.
