A Smith Mountain Lake family session is always something special, but this one felt extra meaningful. This extended family chose their favorite SML rental as the backdrop, a place filled with memories, laughter, and time spent together over the years. It made the entire session feel relaxed, personal, and full of genuine connection from the very start.
We began by exploring the spots that grandparents were able to go to. Photographing everyone together in their most favorite spot for vacation added so much depth to the session. You could truly feel the history and love woven into each moment.
After capturing the full extended group, one family decided to break off for a smaller, more intimate portion of the session. This gave us a chance to slow things down and focus on their unique dynamic while still enjoying the same beautiful setting. It’s always a great idea to incorporate both large group photos and smaller family units during extended sessions, it creates a well-rounded gallery with a variety of moments.
The location itself couldn’t have been more perfect. The rental featured its own private beach, which gave us a soft, natural setting for candid shots, and a stunning dock that offered classic Smith Mountain Lake views. As the evening went on, we were treated to an incredible sunset that painted the sky in warm, glowing tones, easily one of the highlights of the entire session.
