As a Smith Mountain Lake wedding photographer, I get to witness some truly special stories, and Luke and Rollins’ surprise proposal was one I won’t forget.
Luke reached out wanting to plan something intimate and unforgettable at one of their favorite spots near Smith Mountain Lake. He chose the charming little church tucked inside The Water’s Edge Country Club golf course, a quiet, scenic, and full of personal meaning for them both. It was the perfect setting for such a big moment.
I arrived early and positioned myself nearby, trying my best to blend in. To keep things natural, I pretended to be photographing the beautiful views of the area, anything to avoid drawing attention. The anticipation was real, and honestly, moments like this always get my heart racing just a little. There’s something about knowing what’s about to happen while one person has no idea that makes it so exciting.
When Luke and Rollins walked up to the church, everything unfolded perfectly. Within moments, Luke got down on one knee and Rollins’ reaction said it all. Total surprise, pure joy, and so much emotion. It was one of those genuine, unfiltered reactions that you just can’t stage, and capturing it was such an honor.
After the proposal, we spent some time taking portraits around the property, soaking in that “just engaged” glow. These two were incredibly sweet, easygoing, and clearly so in love. It made the entire experience feel effortless and fun.
Luke put so much thought into making this moment special, and it truly paid off. Rollins was completely surprised, and the setting couldn’t have been more perfect for them.
